There are certain artists whose sound feels naturally designed for open skies, sea air and the shifting colours of a Mediterranean sunset. Space Motion is firmly among them, known for crafting sets that move between deep melodic storytelling, driving rhythm and emotional release in a way that translates seamlessly from underground clubs to vast festival stages and open-air environments.
As a DJ and producer prepares for his debut at the much-hyped DIO in Crete on July 2, anticipation is building for a performance set against one of the most striking backdrops in the region. Located on the shores of Hersonissos, DIO has quickly positioned itself as a new reference point for beachfront electronic music experiences, blending music, nature and hospitality into a single immersive setting.
The upcoming appearance will see Space Motion step into the venue’s DIONYSIA concept, a sunset-driven series inspired by freedom, celebration and collective experience. With the sea on one side and a gradually darkening sky on the other, the setting offers a canvas that feels almost tailor-made for his emotionally charged sound.
Ahead of the show, Techno Station sat down with Space Motion to discuss his approach to reading a crowd, the unique energy of seaside performances, and what clubbers can expect when he makes his first appearance at DIO this summer.
Hi Atila, thanks very much for taking the time to chat with us for our Techno Station readers. How are you and where in the world are you right now?
A pleasure to be chatting with you. As I write this, I’ve just finished a run of shows across Turkey, with the highlight being my recent performance at Monolith: The Valley in Cappadocia. It was an incredible setting, and the production and atmosphere made it a truly memorable experience. Thank you to everyone who attended.
I’m now heading home for a few days to spend some quality time with my family before getting back on the road for the rest of my summer tour.
On July 2, you’ll make your debut at DIO in Crete, one of the Mediterranean’s most exciting new beach club destinations. What first attracted you to the project, and what are your expectations heading into the show?
This is a very exciting new project for Crete. My manager has been closely involved in the venue’s music direction and brand development alongside the owner, William Matthews, who has an incredible legacy of success, including Star Beach.
From everything I have seen, DIO has all the ingredients to become one of the island’s premier beach club destinations. I always enjoy playing more intimate venues because they allow for a real connection with the audience, and I am genuinely looking forward to making my debut there on July 2.
My goal is always the same. To take people on a musical journey through my past, present and future, creating an experience that they will remember long after the final track. I have been fortunate enough to perform at many of the world’s leading beach clubs and seaside events, and there is something truly special about playing by the sea as the sun sets. I cannot wait to bring that energy to DIO and share a very special night with everyone in Crete.
DIO’s Thursday concept, DIONYSIA, draws inspiration from the mythology of Dionysus and centres around freedom, celebration and immersive musical experiences. Does performing within a concept like this influence how you approach a set?
I always read the crowd. Every audience is different, and it’s my job to understand what they need.
If the crowd is a little slower to warm up, which I honestly don’t expect at DIO, I’ll focus on one pocket of people first. Once I see that energy building, I’ll move to the next group and gradually bring everyone together until the whole venue is moving as one.
For me, that’s one of the most rewarding parts of DJing. When you can feel the energy spread across the room and even the staff and security are doing their best not to dance, you know you’ve created something special.
Your music is known for creating emotional journeys that blend melodic depth with powerful energy. How do you plan to translate that sound into a sunset beachfront environment like DIO?
Throughout my career, I’ve explored and drawn inspiration from many of the subgenres within Afro House, Melodic House and Progressive House, blending elements of each to create a sound that feels unique and true to who I am as an artist.
I never plan a set around one specific style. I hand-pick every track based on the moment, the atmosphere and the energy of the crowd. Every performance is different, so it’s difficult to say exactly what I’ll play. I let the music and the audience guide the journey.
Crete has developed its own unique identity within the European music scene. What excites you most about performing on the island, and what kind of connection are you hoping to create with the crowd?
I want to give the crowd something they’ll remember long after the night is over. Every performance is an opportunity to express who I am as an artist while creating a journey that connects with everyone in the audience.
Most of all, I want people to leave with a smile on their faces, having shared a special moment together. It’s summer in Crete, the atmosphere is incredible, and I want the music to be the soundtrack to an unforgettable celebration.
As an artist, how important is the setting itself? When you’re standing behind the decks overlooking the sea at sunset, does the location influence the direction and energy of your performance?
Absolutely. Music has always gone hand in hand with the beauty of nature, which is why legendary brands like Café Mambo and Café del Mar have remained so iconic for almost 50 years.
Every sunset is different, every sky has its own colours, and every night has its own atmosphere as the sun disappears and the moon begins to rise. That is what makes outdoor and beachfront venues so special. No two experiences are ever the same.
There is something magical about sharing music in those surroundings. It creates moments that simply cannot be recreated indoors, and that is one of the reasons I have always loved playing beach clubs and open-air events.
For those joining you on Thursday, what can they expect from Space Motion on the night, and is there anything special you’ve planned for your debut appearance?
My latest track, Woop Woop, could be my biggest original release to date, and I’m really looking forward to unleashing it at DIO. If you enjoy powerful build ups and high energy moments, it’s definitely one to listen out for.
The track has been thoroughly tested in clubs and festivals, and it consistently creates an incredible reaction, whether I’m playing to an intimate crowd or a massive festival audience. I’m extremely proud of how it has turned out.
Of course, people can also expect to hear some of my signature records, including Lose Myself, Yeke Yeke and Baiana. Those tracks have become part of my identity as an artist and continue to soundtrack clubs, major events and festivals around the world.
They still create amazing moments on the dancefloor, and I can’t wait to share them with everyone at DIO.
