The electronic music world is mourning the loss of Juan Atkins, one of the founding figures of Detroit techno and a member of the legendary Belleville Three. He was 64.

His death was confirmed on November 1, 2026, by Greensmith Artists, the agency representing the Detroit-born producer. Atkins was in Mexico City ahead of a scheduled performance at YuYu Cine Club when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Atkins helped shape the foundations of Detroit techno, creating a sound that would influence generations of electronic music producers and DJs worldwide.

His musical journey began with Cybotron, the project he formed with Richard Davis in 1980. Tracks such as Alleys of Your Mind and the influential 1983 release Clear helped establish a new direction for electronic music.

In 1985, Atkins launched Metroplex Records and began releasing music as Model 500. His groundbreaking track No UFOs became one of the defining records of Detroit techno. His contribution also extended to the genre’s identity itself, with his track Techno Music appearing on the landmark 1988 compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit.

Through Cybotron, Model 500, Infiniti and Borderland, Atkins continued exploring electronic music and expanding its possibilities throughout his career.

His influence cannot be measured simply through discographies or record sales. He helped create a musical language that became a global movement.

Juan Atkins leaves behind a legacy that will continue to resonate through dancefloors, record collections and generations of artists.

Rest in peace, Juan Atkins. Thank you for the music.
