Australia has taken the drug problem seriously and it’s very likely that by the next festival season, pill testing will be legal.
All Australian states have supported the initiative, except New South Wales. The main advocate for harm minimization – Dr Caldicott told Fairfax Media that discussions are progressing and that the local authorities are aimed to push the law.
“We’ve got the funding. Meetings with law enforcement have been face to face and in more than one jurisdiction outside of NSW,” Dr Caldicott said.
“There are very senior police supporting us currently. There are very senior politicians supporting us currently. We are now working out how we can have a system in place for the forthcoming festival season.”
The New South Wales conservative government is prepared to trial pill testing and risk events at events in Sydney and around. Very nice of them. History doesn’t always teach.
