Following on from her critically acclaimed album ‘SoMe’ comes a trio of remixes that represent the different shades of Anja Schneider’s new Sous Music imprint.
One of the joys of following the Berlin artist’s career over the last 15 years has been her predilection for unpredictability and pushing herself outside of her comfort zone. While in most cases these shifts may be more subtle than seismic, it has ensured interest is piqued with every release that comes from her stable.
And so it continues with the multi-faceted remix EP of ‘SoMe’, her second studio album released last November. Butch, Argy and Billy Turner have delivering remixes that are classy, complimentary to her original works, and in true Anja fashion, a little surprising too.
A rising UK techno artists beginning to hit his straps, Turner epitomizes Schneider’s future-focused ethos. The 25-year-old has been on her radar for a while, impressing with his ‘Nocturnal Subconscious’ EP on Twin Turbo last year. He reworks ‘Shadows’ into a dark groovy roller that still retains the melancholic beauty of the original. It’s a track she describes as “absolutely me” – surely the best of Schneider compliments.
Butch is a long-time friend and respected colleague of Anja’s and championed ‘All I See’ from early on, begging her for a copy after seeing her play it at Street Parade. His re-work felt fated, but that didn’t mean it was easy. “I know it was a difficult one for him to do. We didn’t expect the track to be such a huge hit, so I was very interested to see what he’d do. He’s done an amazing job!” she buzzes. Butch delivers an inspired off-kilter minimal house interpretation, that’s heavy on mood without losing the spirit of her original.
Anja has respected, followed and supported Argy’s music since the beginning. A big fan of his recent EP on Cuttin’ Headz, the two artists shared a serendipitous re-connection on the back of Anja’s support of the release. Thus, his involvement in the project was sealed. He re-models ‘Got Me With A Bang’ into a spacey, melody-licked composition. “His remix was the final piece of the puzzle and contrasts the other two really well. I’m very happy!” she says.
