Famed for his work with Loco Dice, Yaya’s New EP titled 13K has his signature groove all over it, that’s all the exuses we need for an interview & a special mix from the talented Yaya
Tell us about your new imprint Tamango Records, why you decided to open it, what are the plans for 2017
I decided to open my own label as when I realized that I need a place to express my feelings and emotions. I’m always searching new stimuli and I think that running a label is a very good one. I need a stable place to release music from myself, good friends and artists and upcoming talents. In the future you’ll see music from artists such as: Cassy, Mike Shannon, Rich NXT and more.
What is the story behind the name Tamango?
Tamango is the name of the first black slave who, according to the legend, rebelled to his slavery condition, but is also inspired by the famous cocktail that my parents still prepare in their pub “Les Arcades” in Turin for 38 years. It’s even stronger than Absinth! So these are the main reasons about the label’s name and I’m very happy about it, I think it’s quite a catchy name too.
Can you tell us about your relationship with Loco Dice, are you still going to release on Desolat or planing to release on your label only?
I knew Dice since a long time. I met him back in 2009 in Ibiza and he’s one of the few people in the music business with whom I have a serious and solid friendship. I love hangin’ out with him, talking about music (of course) and martial arts, which is another big passion for both of us. We’re going to play together very soon at NYE celebration @HYTE in Berlin but also at the beautiful BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and in Bangkok, Thailand and I just can’t wait to see what’s going to happen! In 2017 I mostly want to focus on my newborn imprint as I have tons of new works, jams and fresh ideas, but I still work with Dice and the Desolat’s team, and if there will be an occasion, I will surely sign a new track on Desolat.
What are your essential items when touring?
In my technical rider I always have a combination of Vinyls + CDS, surrounded by SoundBITE Loop Workstation and sometimes I like to play with the Pioneer RMX 1000 which is a very funny and interesting support to my dj sets.
Which track did you hear first today?
This morning I heard my upcoming remix for “Sece – Frontin Final” which is going to be released in 2017 on my dear Hector’s “Vatos Locos” but I don’t know the release date yet, so stay tuned for this one.
What’s been your longest DJ set?
My longest marathon was in a private villa in Ibiza. I played for 36 hours in a super after party situation b2b with my good friend Dave Mantra. It was a very memorable moment on the Island… I would do it right now!
What are your plans for the holidays? Where are you playing on Christmas & NYE?
I spent my holidays and Christmas time between my family in Turin and my studio in Berlin. As I said before I will play again in the Desolat Showcase @BPM (Salsanera) with Loco Dice, Cuartero, Francisco Allendes, Caleb Calloway and many more. The week after I’m planning to take some vacation in Mexico and enjoy that amazing place. On Christmas I played in my hometown Turin @La Gare with our fiesta called “Savana Potente” that accompanies us for more than 11 years, while at NYE I will play @HYTE in Berlin.
Happy new year 🙂
