Marco Bailey Interview, talked About Materia Parties in Ibiza and his latest release.

Marco Bailey is often referred to as the Belgian techno god, or at least, as the Belgian techno legend. Both statuses are well-deserved in more than 30 years of devotion to the scene.
His MB Electronics imprint is one of the most respected techno labels and Marco himself travels hard. He still found time to start a line on Ibiza, called Materia.

How are you, how is summer for you so far? Whats good, whats bad?

Summer has been good , just started. Actually been nice start up with beside the opening of Materia last Sunday in Ibiza was nice one with amazing sets by Shlomi Aber, Sam Paganini , Zoe …

Do you think Ibiza is about too much VIP and glamour culture? Does that not work when it comes to techno?

I think for techno you need a bigger dancefloor and a smaller table yes , but the ones who go for the bigger table and the smaller dance floor playing mostly more cheesy so i prefer a bigger dance floor !

Of course compiling a line up is one of the sweetest nightmares of all …its like refusing people on an afterparty …your heart says yes , but you have to say a lot NO …

Why did you decide to start a residency in Ibiza? What do you feel you add to the island?

I decided to give it a try here in Ibiza because people from whole over the world are coming to ibiza. In one place you can meet people from Mexico to Japan to USA to Italy, that’s mostly not possible in other countries. My hope is that many of them wanna dance rather the standing in the spotlight “ like have you seen me “ 🙂 and i hope many people come to discover fresh and quality techno

How did you decide on the venue? What made this one right for you?

Because i love the venue, it is small intimate and very good sound system, perfect for Techno!

The club has big windows but you chose to block these, right? Why is that?

Because i wanna give maximum possibility to have best effect of our visuals, the lights and not make it a restaurant atmosphere , it has to be a club to dance and feel the music & feel the flow !
If the moment is right we will open the curtains sometimes for the sunrise! But the night should stay dark and not like a restaurant full of lights and candles .

Is techno best in a dark space, does it not work in the sun for you?

Techno works for sure in the sun too , but in the night there is no sun ! 🙂 and a club is not a restaurant , with F*** up faces in the morning , its a place to dance and feel the music .

How differently does Marco Bailey play as resident at your own event rather than as a headliner?

I am not playing much different , i always try to give the crowd a great time but not to play the hits , also i like a nice flow in sets not one lined out sets … it should have a nice flow.

Lots of friends i would like to invite , not only because they are friends but also because i like their skills as a dj and some of them their productions too .
The main key is of course TECHNO , so the find a smooth line between the dark and deep Berlin sound like VRIL & Markus Suckut and the more peak time acts like Sam Paganini & Julian Jeweil or Paul Ritch & Myself its not always easy , but i think we succeeded within a certain budget as well , the venue is an intimate venue not mega big so you have to keep in mind lot of things …^^^ .,..

What tunes were big at the first Materia – will any become minor classics this season, do you think?

So many records are outstanding …New Johannes Volk -Asteroid Riding , …Steve Rachmad remix for Aera on Innervisions , Shlomi Aber his new release on BE AS ONE is outstanding !
Robert Hood his album on Dekmantel , Jeff Mills his new album , Miki Craven his tune Black Rice and many more!
