SEPT – the talented Polish DJ and producer presents his intriguing new project called OPUS, which will combine two branches of art: music and painting.
Sept is one of the most acclaimed techno producers from Poland. His music has so far been released on such respected labels as Clergy, Sacred Court, Voxnox, Exhale, and his DJ sets have been recorded for Boiler Room, Reclaim Your City, Slam Radio, The Brvtalist, Synoid, HATE, HÖR, among others.
Known for his distinct and powerful style of deejaying, he has performed in clubs and festivals across Europe, Asia as well as North and South America.
Back to classic techno
With the launch of his new musical project, Sept also decided to make a change in his musical style and return to his roots, which is classic techno.
Transformation of Sept’s style. Tired of the direction of the Hard Techno scene
It all started with a transformation of Sept’s style – the idea for the new label and new, different sound of music was the result of several factors. And how did it all begin?
In September 2023, Michel had his laptop stolen with a large number of musical sketches, brand new tracks, kept in a Hard Techno style. At the same time, it was also a time when the artist was already very doubtful about remaining part of the scene, which was moving in a direction, in which he slowly stopped finding himself comfortable.
So he saw the theft of his laptop with his finished music as a kind of sign to abandon the sound he no longer identified with. He decided to return to his roots – to classic techno.
That’s when the idea for OPUS was born – a new series of events that was supposed to be more artistic.
For techno music is like abstract art – it’s not for everyone, but the two go hand in hand.
Shortly afterwards, he received an offer from Rudeboy (the club’s booker) to start a residency party series in the Crackhouse club in Gdańsk, and without thinking too much, he decided to turn the concept into reality.
Joint art-platform of Sept & Surrollie
OPUS project thus becomes a joint platform for musicians and visual artists – for the music released by the label, Olimpia creates paintings inspired by this music. In addition to this artistic, creative synergy, Olimpia will also be responsible for curating potential collaborations with visual artists to present their art at selected techno-events.
The whole project is thus interdisciplinary: Sept (Michel Morales), Surrollie (Olimpia Kogut) and Rudeboy (Szymon Nowicki) form OPUS, giving clubbers a peculiar combination of the visual splendour of painting with the pulsating beats of dance music.
„OPUS is a fusion of visual brilliance and pulsating beats that transcends the boundaries of traditional experiences. This emerging project is the epitome of synergy between art and electronic music, where every stroke of the brush and every sonic pulse are meticulously orchestrated to create an immersive journey. OPUS invites you to step into a world where each note resonates with the vibrant strokes of artistic expression. Join us in this extraordinary celebration of the interconnected realms of art and electronic music, where every moment turns into piece of art” encourage Sept i Surrollie.
Ultrafast TikTok consumption vs. contemplating the paintings and music
“Tik-Tokization” of the content to get the viewer interested just for 5 seconds, or the scheme: “a catchy tune and a fast tempo” is not a good thing. My intention is to get the listener to focus on the music, in the same way that paintings are contemplated at a vernissage. Music and art are about dedicated reception, not just „come and go”.
The title of the EP – „Timeless Exploration” (premiere on 22.05.’24) – is meant to encourage people to deeper reflection, to focus on the music. Trends pass and timeless things will always sound qualitatively, emphasises Sept.
The painting inspired by (techno) music
This record needed to be produced in about two months: in late ’23 and early ’24.
I had a bit of creative space at that time: everyone was focused on Christmas, and I totally immersed myself in music, says Sept.
It used to be the case in the past that films were made and then soundtracks were composed for them. In the case of our collaboration, it was the other way around: I produced the music and Surrollie was inspired by it and painted the first picture. It took time to create the painting – just as it took time to produce the music. It took Olimpia a week.
