German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has released a short film about the origins of techno and its role in Berlin’s recent history.
How technology came to be:From Detroit to Berlin and Back features interviews with Alan Oldham (DJ T-1000), Ellen Allien, Juan Atkins and Tresor Berlin founder Dimitri Hegemann. The film explores the period directly after the fall of the Berlin Wall and Detroit’s influence on the then nascent tech scene.
The documentary features archival footage of Berlin in the late ’80s and early ’90s, including the early days of Tresor and other clubs, as well as vintage interviews with Blake Baxter and Paul van Dyk. It was filmed by journalist Ute Pfeiffer and uploaded to YouTube a week ago.
