The Berlin-based Raster-Noton was founded in 1999 by merge of two imprints -Rastermusic founded by Olaf Bender and Frank Bretschneider in 1996 and Noton (Archiv für Ton und Nichtton) run by Carsten Nikolai. The label was intended to be a platform to merge pop, art and science. That wasn’t the pop music in it’s flat presence, but minimalist sound-design.
The releases on Raster-Noton have always been special items of musical and visual design. They won’t impress someone, who takes music as fun, but it will be a precious experience for a sound collector and audiophile. The music released by Raster-Noton is a subject for a collection and a reason to connect hand-made speakers to an analogue amplifier with golden wires.
The impressive list of releases contains the names of Atom™, Ueno Masaaki, Kyoka, Dasha Rush, Vladislav Delay and many more.
One of the label’s resident duos – Alva Noto + Ryuichi Sakamoto met 2016 with a Golden Globe Award nomination for the Best Original Score* to “The Revenant” by Alejandro Iñárritu.
April 29th will give a start to a three-day event at Berghain, thrown to celebrate the label’s 20-year anniversary where Alva Noto will perform live. Other artists, listed for the event are Marcel Dettmann, Dasha Rush (Live), Atom™ (Live), Magda, Nastia and many more.
