This week on CLUB ZOOM IN we are covering a hot spot of UK clubbing scene, Ministry of Sound.
Ministry of Sound first opened its doors way back in September 1991. Inspired by New York’s cavernous house venues, our home was a derelict bus garage in south London – an area that, at the time, was more infamous than famous. The first night had no alcohol, three flashing lights, moody security and unless you knew the names of at least half-a-dozen Chicago house DJs, you were never getting through the menacing, prison-like, gates.
Despite these eccentricities, the night was a success and within a matter of weeks, word had spread that something special had landed smack bang in the middle of London’s club scene. This was the first club dedicated to house music, the first club to pick up the gauntlet laid down by the second summer of love and, most importantly, the world’s first nightclub with a room built purely for exceptional sound quality.
To this day sound is still at the forefront of everything we do. Put simply, there is no better place on earth to hear the world’s greatest DJs play the world’s best music.
The club consists of four rooms: The Box, 103, Baby Box and The Loft.
The Box was designed to make sound quality paramount, with towering speaker stacks, several million watts of bass and triple-thick absorbing walls. Basically, you have to experience The Box in person to appreciate just how unique it is.
103 is the first room you come to after entering the club. Serving as the second stage on club nights, this is where breakthrough artists come to hit the big leagues.
Baby Box is tucked away beside the 103 to create an intimate third room whilst The Loft is the best place to catch upcoming record labels and promoters before they’ve taken off.
The club boasts a 64-speaker, 22-channel sound-system with a ring of six bespoke Martin Audio ground stacks positioned around the dancefloor of The Box.
When it comes to program, Ministry of Sound host dance music events, from house to techno and trance while upcoming events feature names such as Sasha and Ben Klock.
